Royal National Lifeboat Institution
Bringing people home safely from the sea, day and night
Our mission
Anyone can drown. No one should.
Anyone can drown, and the RNLI exists so that no one should. Since 1824 the charity has been saving lives at sea around the coasts of the UK and Ireland, with one aim: to save every one.
Its volunteer lifeboat crews are ready to launch 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from 238 lifeboat stations. Many crew members join with no maritime experience at all; the RNLI gives them the training, kit and boats they need to bring people home safely.
Every summer, RNLI lifeguards patrol 249 busy beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. They share safety advice, give first aid and are ready to rescue anyone who gets into trouble in the water.
Beyond rescue, its community safety teams help people understand the risks before they head to the coast, and its international teams work with partners to tackle drowning in the communities most at risk around the world. The RNLI is independent of government and relies on donations, and 97% of its frontline lifesavers are volunteers.
